The manual manipulation of muscles, tendons, connective tissues, and ligaments is referred to as massage therapy. The procedure improves a person’s health status and their well-being also. Massage therapy serves many purposes, ranging from stress and anxiety reduction, muscle relaxation, injuries rehabilitation, pain reduction and just promoting overall health and wellness of a person. Massage also enhances the blood circulation and tonifies the body system
Massage accomplishes the functions by manipulating the soft tissues specifically the muscles, tendons, and ligaments. The massage therapist uses his hands to treat and detect physical and emotional problems of a patient. During this process the therapist strokes the patient’s body with his or her hands, and this enables him or her to identify the likely source of pain and the tissue condition. Massage uses two major working mechanisms. One is the mechanical action that is created by moving the muscles and soft tissues of the body using stretching movement and pressures. Acids and deposits in these tissues are cleared disintegrating fibrous tissue and relaxation of the stiff joints.
The other working mechanism is the reflex which comes about when treatment of one part of the body affects another part of the body. This is made possible since when pressure is applied on one part of the body, it is transmitted to the other parts through the nerve pathways. Hence, the therapists can apply pressure on the back to treat the stomach or the legs and so on. Therapeutic massage concentrates mostly on health restoration while relaxation massage aims at relaxing the individual.
There exists a lot of message types. An example is the pregnancy massage, sports massage, reflexology, deep tissue massage and hot stone massage. All these are different and since therapeutic needs vary from person-to-person and from day-to-day, different people require different types of massages. Understanding the different strokes applied in each type is key to choosing the best massage type suitable for a given individual.
The results of the gentle massage is the muscle relaxation and a sense of well-being. Stimulation of the nerve endings in the skin results in muscle relaxation. The feel-good sensation is as a result of the endorphins being released by the nerves and the inhibition of the stress hormones. On the other hand, stronger massage concentrates more on the circulatory system. The result of this is the enhancement of the oxygen and nutrient supply to tissues and hence relaxes them. They also enhance the lymphatic system which transports waste products, which cause pain and muscle stiffness, away from the tissues. The greatest function of the massage therapy is enhancement of the well-being of a person; It is in the interest of the every person to be healthy, so going for the massage therapy would be a good idea.
